Scion FR-S to Become Toyota 86
Fear not, Scion lovers, the exciting Scion FR-S will live on, albeit with a slight name change as Toyota absorbs the Scion brand. The FR-S will become the Toyota 86, starting with the next model year. The new 2017 Toyota 86 debuted at the New York international Auto Show in March, and is expected to go on sale in the fall of 2016.
"When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn't planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of '86'" said Toyota Division Group Vice President Bill Fay. Enthusiasts have a strong association with the front-engine, rear-drive heritage of the 'hachi-roku' and the dynamic performance it offers".
The 2017 Toyota 86 will continue to be powered by a 2.0-liter Boxer engine, and will gain a boost to 205 horsepower on the manual version, as well as an additional 5 ft-lb of torque. Toyota says to expect "additional performance" thanks to different gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission. Newly-added Hill Start Assist Control will be another bonus for manual drivers.
